Harmony Science Academy Pflugerville Students Get Ahead Through Early College Program

At Harmony Science Academy Pflugerville, students are getting a head start on their college education through the school’s Early College High School (ECHS) program, which allows them to earn college credits while still in high school.

The ECHSl program, a partnership between Harmony Public Schools Central Texas and Austin Community College, offers students the opportunity to graduate with not only a high school diploma but also an associate degree, earning up to 60 hours of transferable college credit at no cost to families.

Senior Kayla Akwari chose to apply to the program for practical reasons.

“I knew I wanted to be a doctor, but I was hesitant because it takes so long,” Akwari said. “My parents encouraged me to join Early College High School because it would help me reach my goal faster, get into medical school sooner, and save money.”

Students accepted into the program begin taking college-level courses in their freshman year, progressing through a structured academic pathway that combines rigorous high school classes with real college academics and experiences. For many, it is a demanding program that offers significant rewards.

As the College and Career Counselor, Maria Martinez said she takes pride in seeing students achieve more than they ever thought possible.

“I’m very proud to help our students graduate with an associate degree,” Martinez said. “Their dedication amazes me. They are full-time high school students completing college courses while preparing for life after high school.”

The process begins with an application and an interview to ensure that students understand the program’s expectations. Once accepted, they receive guidance from college advisors, success coaches and Harmony teachers who help them manage both their high school and college coursework. The partnership with Austin Community College ensures that each course counts toward a degree plan, making the path to higher education clear and attainable.

“Transitioning from middle school to high school and then to college was a big change,” Akwari said. “Time management was the hardest part, but Harmony made it easier with tutoring sessions, supportive teachers and regular check-ins from Ms. Martinez.”

Akwari said the ECHS experience has taught her lessons that go far beyond the classroom. In addition to time management, she has learned organization and study skills that prepare her for future success. Additionally, her self-confidence in moving forward with her life plans has grown significantly.

“I’ve applied to 16 colleges, and my top choices are Howard University, the University of Texas and Texas A&M,” Akwari said. “Harmony has helped us prepare with FAFSA nights, Saturday boot camps and even class time during the day to work on essays and college applications.”

Martinez said the ECHS program helps students grow beyond academics. “Our students are resilient,” Martinez said. “They are learning how to dedicate themselves fully to whatever they do in life.”

Harmony’s support extends from the college application process through life after graduation. From financial aid and applications to post-graduation guidance, the school provides every tool students need to succeed, continuing to check in with graduates for up to two years and maintaining lifelong connections built on care and commitment.

For Harmony Science Academy Pflugerville, the Early College High School program reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to providing every student with access to opportunity, academic challenge and a strong start toward college and career success.
